Makeovers require careful planning, says Dawn, a junior colour technician who came to Taz in the spring of 2010 after six years in the industry, and after an apprenticeship in Oshawa. “You don’t just throw the colour on; you need to analyze the client’s eye colour and skin tones,” she said, adding that understanding how to formulate the colour for just the right look is critical.
She likes to make sure her clients are educated about the best products for their hair, joking that she feels like a doctor handing out prescriptions. She sees current trends that include a move to more natural looks by blending in greys and using a tone on tone colour.
Dawn admits she is intensely focussed on her hairstyling career. So after hours she likes to get outdoors and go fishing or four-wheeling. “Then I have no choice but not think about my hair,” she said.
