Trophies and tattoos tell the story of Susan Hayward’s dedication to top quality performance as a senior hair colourist. She’s earned bragging rights for the next few months as the 2010 Canadian Hair Colourist of the Year. Her previous achievements include the 2005 Canadian Makeover Colourist of the Year and the North American Hair Colourist of the Year. In between competitions, she is an ID artist for L’Oreal Professionnel, doing workshops and stage presentations for colleagues. Striving for success is in her blood. “It’s not okay to coast,” she says.
With 16 years in the industry, half of that at Taz, Susan says it’s her drive to exceed expectations and her attention to detail that her clients like. As a result, she has inspired incredible loyalty from her clients, including some from out of town (Winnipeg, Newfoundland and England) who make special trips to Taz for colour maintenance.
Outside the salon, Susan likes heavy metal music and, of course, collecting tattoos. “It’s like my stamp collection, but I wear it,” she said. Her right arm features symbols of her family heritage and her left is decorated with a colour wheel , worn like a badge to represent her continued passion for her work.
