Stylists joke that they have a psychologist’s listening skills because they hear so many personal stories from their clients. But Chris, a junior stylist at Taz, is one of the few people who actually has a degree to prove it. After earning her master’s degree in psychology from the University of Western Ontario, she worked in counselling. Still she never forgot her first interest – beauty. During all her years of studying, she did hair and make-up for friends and family on the side, finally switching careers to work as a make-up artist for a decade. That included a period with Yves St Laurent at Holt Renfrew, where she was especially busy during the film festival when celebrities such as Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones came in for a touch up. Later she went back to school again to study hairdressing, joining Taz in October 2009.
Chris believes that maintaining an attractive hairstyle is part of a holistic approach to taking care of yourself. She has seen the effects while volunteering for Princess Margaret Hospital’s Look Good, Feel Better program for people recovering from cancer treatments. “A bad hair day really has a psychological impact,” she said.
